Words of wisdom and advice from our science fair alumni...

Denisse Lopez, 1st Place Animal Science Senior Division, 60th RGV RSEF

My name is Denisse Lopez. I am currently a senior at Hanna ECHS and have participated in the Rio Grande Valley Science and Engineering Fair for four years now. Starting my freshman year, I heard about this fair. My first thought was just doing it for extra points in my biology class. Little did I know that this would be one of the biggest projects I would challenge myself in. I brainstormed ideas until I found the perfect one. I would test whether perfumes attract mosquitoes. I have done continuous research on this topic for the past four years, and with the help of some college professors, I have gotten tips and advice to improve my project. Furthermore, my love for science grew as I participated in every competition. Participating in the Science Fair has taught me how to be responsible, allowed me to learn communication and leadership skills, and it has improved my time management skills. Throughout high school I have been part of many clubs including: Strutters Dance Team, Ballroom Dance Team, Technology Student Association, Health Occupations Students of America, Skills USA, National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, Ecology Club, Science Fair, and I attend my dance studio outside of school. As you can see, I was a very busy person. However, I am currently ranked 26 out of my class with a gpa of 4.578. This proves that I was able to manage and find a balance between my academics and extracurricular activities. Choosing which college I want to attend next semester wasn’t hard for me. I have currently decided to stay in the valley and attend the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. I am pursuing a biology degree; my goal is to receive my master’s degree in Biology and go to medical school to achieve my dream of becoming a pediatrician. Lastly, I couldn’t be more thankful for all the opportunities that have been provided to me by just participating in the Science Fair. It has allowed me to decide what career pathway I wish to pursue, and it has helped me become a better person overall.

Thank You,

Denisse Lopez
